Rohit Singla (MD/PhD student; IMP Class of 2025) has been named a 2020 Vanier Scholar (NSERC). He received the scholarship for his proposal titled “Intelligent Renal Ultrasound: Development of Ultrasound-based Measures Using Machine Learning to Prevent Renal Disease Progression.”
“I’ll be exploring how ultrasound can be used to detect a diseased kidney and to quantify micro-structural changes, as well as simplifying ultrasound image acquisition,” Rohit says. “Chronic kidney disease impacts over 10% of the Canadian population, and answering these questions may reduce the overall burden of this disease on Canadians.”
A Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is valued at $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies, and considers three equally weighted selection criteria: academic excellence, research potential, and leadership. Rohit says the scholarship will provide him with academic freedom and the ability to fully focus on research.
Rohit is part of the MD/PhD program at the IMP. Offered jointly by the UBC Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, this seven-year program allows highly qualified students to combine medical school with intensive scientific training. Rohit is completing his PhD studies in biomedical engineering.
