Drs. Ashley Jewett, Vivian Braithwaite, James Goulding, Fraser Black, Joana Gil-Mohapel, and Tracy Mihalynuk were recently recognized for their teaching contributions to the Island Medical Program.
Dr. Ashley Jewett (Psychiatry) received the 2022 Vancouver Island Clerkship Preceptors Teaching Excellence Award. This award acknowledges the outstanding dedication, enthusiasm, and respect a clerkship preceptor demonstrates in teaching the IMP’s third-year students. Dr. Jewett also received this award in 2021.

Dr. Vivian Braithwaite
Dr. Vivian Braithwaite (Internal Medicine) received the 2022 Resident Teaching Excellence Award, which acknowledges the outstanding dedication, enthusiasm, and respect that a resident demonstrates in teaching third-year students at the IMP.

Dr. James Goulding
Dr. James Goulding accepted the 2022 Island Medical Program Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award on behalf of the Emergency Medicine rotation. This award acknowledges the rotation that provides the most efficient, supportive, and engaging learning environment for IMP’s third-year clinical clerk medical students.
The recipients of the above awards are recommended by current fourth-year IMP students based on experiences during their third year.

Dr. Fraser Black
Dr. Fraser Black received the Dr. Bruce Crawford Award of Excellence for 2022. This award is presented by the IMP’s third-year students to the teacher, preceptor, or tutor who has made an impact on their first two years of medical training.

Dr. Joana Gil-Mohapel
Dr. Joana Gil-Mohapel received the Teaching Award in Medical Sciences for 2022. The purpose of the award is to recognize and reward excellence in teaching in the IMP preclinical years or Division of Medical Sciences (DMS) at the University of Victoria.Selection Committee, chaired by me. The award selection committee selected Dr. Gil-Mohapel as the recipient based on her engaging and accessible teaching approach centered on the students and their needs.

Dr. Tracy Mihalynuk
Finally, received the 2021-2022 Island Medical Program Community Family Physician Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching. Dr. Mihalynuk is a dedicated teacher who has welcomed Year 1 & 2 students into her family practice clinic and worked with them on Primary Clinical Care office visits every year since 2009.
