Want to learn more about the Island Medical Program (IMP) / the UBC MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP) and it’s admissions pathways?

Then join the IMP admissions team for one of our free hour-long information sessions in the 2025 – 2026 academic year!

At the monthly General Sessions, you will learn everything you need to know about applying to the IMP / UBC MDUP, including admissions requirements, application dates and deadlines, academic and non-academic requirements, admission pathways, and an overview of the application process and selection criteria. You’ll also learn more about the program and have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

This year, we will also be hosting additional sessions for the Black Student Pathway, Indigenous Pathway, and Northern and Rural Pathway. These sessions will cover more specific details about each of these admission pathways, as well as introduce you to the pathway contacts who work right here at the IMP.

All of the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 information sessions are available simultaneously in-person on UVic campus and on Zoom.

Clerkship in the Comox Valley

UBC medical student Lacey Smith is packing her bags and moving across the province for a unique educational experience on Vancouver Island. Starting in June, she will be one of four inaugural Year 3 students attending the Comox Valley MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP) Integrated Community Clerkship (ICC) Site for a year of longitudinal learning.

“I lived on the Island prior to medical school, and I couldn’t wait to come back,” says Lacey, who attends the UBC MDUP Northern Medical Program in Prince George. “I can’t wait to ride my bike to school every day.”

Long-form Learning

Like other sites in the MDUP’s ICC stream, the new Comox Valley site will offer third-year UBC medical students the opportunity to enhance their clinical education by living and learning within a rural area. Lacey and her peers will receive the same core education as learners in urban centres, but they will train in a significantly different way. Instead of rotating through each clinical discipline separately in a traditional clerkship, they will learn through ongoing exposure to multiple disciplines throughout the entire year. This training will take place in various locations throughout the Comox Valley’s three main communities of Courtenay, Comox, and Cumberland, including in family medicine and specialty clinics, public health and wellness centres, and the North Island Hospital Comox Valley.

“The beauty of the ICC model—the thing that sets it apart from traditional block learning in big centres—is that students learn longitudinally, have the opportunity to know some of their patients longitudinally, and form relationships with mentors longitudinally,” say Dr. Patricia Murphy, ICC Site Director, Comox Valley.

This long-form model is one of the things that drew Lacey to the ICC. “I wanted to experience the longitudinal aspect of primary care and have a lot of variety day-to-day,” she says. “I love the idea of learning outside of the traditional block rotations and getting to experience the roles of primary care providers.”

The model also encourages students to form long-term, trusting relationships with preceptors, mentors, and patients. “When you have relationships, you feel more confident,” say Dr. Murphy. “You trust them and they trust you, and that is just the best way to learn.”

Long-standing Medical Education Community

The new ICC site isn’t the first medical education site in the Comox Valley. Courtenay and Comox are already home to the UBC Strathcona Family Medicine Residency Site (which has a second location in nearby Campbell River). The Comox Valley’s medical education community also regularly welcomes both undergraduate and postgraduate learners training in internal medicine, psychiatry, urology, anesthesiology, and emergency medicine.

The Comox Valley is the traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation. The mid-sized rural centre, which contains the communities of Comox, Courtenay, and Cumberland, is home to a combined population of approximately 76,000 people and is located about three hours north of Victoria.

“The Comox Valley ICC provides an excellent opportunity to embed learners in a well-established teaching site, where they will learn from the residents and physicians who hopefully will be some of their colleagues in that region one day,” explains Dr. Laura Farrell, Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Island, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia (UBC) & Academic Director, Vancouver Island, UBC Distributed Programs, University of Victoria (UVic).

Thanks in part to the prior success of these sites and their teachers, Dr. Murphy says the new ICC site will be able to provide learners with a lot of resources. “If [our ICC students] are keen, creative, and inspired, the world is [their] oyster in the terms of a learning environment,” she says.

“I am so appreciative of the work Dr. Murphy and the whole Comox Valley community have done to offer this new opportunity to our UBC medical students,” Dr. Farrell adds.

Long-term Impact

Medical students in the Comox Valley bring value to the area’s healthcare system in several ways, and it’s expected ICC students will do the same.

Dr. Murphy says she has seen learners regularly have powerful and meaningful interactions with patients, bringing joy and positivity to their care. These interactions also deepen learners’ connection with the community, leading many to return after training.

“We know that training medical students in a distributed model results in students staying or returning to their training site to practice and meet the needs of the community,” says Dr. Farrell.

While nothing is set in stone, an eventual return is already on Lacey’s mind. “I love everything about the Island, and my dream is to work in a small community on Vancouver Island or one of the surrounding islands,” she says.

IMP Student Receives Inaugural Molloy Medicine Award

Congratulations to Sonora Godfrey (IMP Class of 2026) on receiving one of the inaugural Molloy Medicine Awards. The awards recognize medical students across Canada who have made significant contributions in supporting vulnerable and underserved populations.

“I was so shocked and honoured to receive this award, especially while reading the biographies of the other students involved and their incredible achievements. It is so inspiring to hear their stories and such an unbelievable privilege to be honoured alongside them,” Sonora says.

*Sonora Godfrey (IMP Class of 2026) is one of five UBC medical students to receive the scholarship award.*

Prior to medical school, Sonora managed an outreach centre, worked in urgent mental health and substance use, took part in antiracism projects, participated in SARS-CoV-2 and overdose prevention research, worked for the Provincial Health Office of Dr. Bonnie Henry, and more. Currently, she works as a researcher with Dr. Tonia Nicholls’ Nicholls Lab at the UBC Department of Psychiatry. Here, she has contributed to projects about the female experience of homelessness, forensic patient needs assessments, and healthcare design.

In the future, Sonora would like to embark on projects providing mental health care to rural and remote communities on Vancouver Island. “I hope to give back in small part to my community,” she says.

“At the IMP, I’ve been privileged to maintain my family and community roots, and balance international research experience with growing relationships in Victoria and Island communities,” she adds. “I can’t wait to continuing growing as an internationally connected and locally rooted care provider focused on the underrepresented groups that most deserve our ongoing humility and dedication.”

While she will always be passionate about supporting mental health and social causes, Sonora says one of the major reasons she wants to become a physician is the opportunity to be an advocate and leader for patients and communities.

“While working in mental health and with underserved populations, [I’ve seen how] the respect and importance the physician placed on the patients’ well-being, comfort, and dignity could mean a ripple effect in their wellness and in the safety and trust of a whole community,” she says. “Patients offer great insight, and it is such an honour to receive their trust; to treasure those relationships and pass on their suggestions, needs, and perspectives so people and communities can feel seen is an exceptional privilege.”

Teaching Medicine Through Theatre

Rosemary has a unique role in the IMP’s Patient Program. Unlike other participants, the medical conditions she presents to students are not her own.

Instead, as a Standardized Patient (SP), Rosemary realistically portrays different patients with unique personal histories, physical symptoms, emotional characteristics, and everyday concerns. Which authentic patient she plays varies depending on the teaching event and its intended learning outcomes. Some are designed to refine the students’ interviewing and history taking skills, while others test their physical examination skills.

*Rosemary draws on both her healthcare and theatre experience when working as a Standardized Patient with the IMP*.

In her role, Rosemary needs to memorize scenarios and convincingly portray a range of emotions and physical symptoms. The most important aspect of her role, however, is consistency and reliability.

“Standardized Patients are trained to portray patients in a specific, standardized way,” explains Sammie Gough, one of the Patient Program’s Clinical Patient Recruiter and Trainers. “This is necessary to deliver the same experience to a large volume of learners, whether its for teaching purposes and for examinations.”

We sat down with Rosemary to ask her about her three years as a Standardized Patient and how she uses artistic expression to help teach medical students about the human side of medicine.

Hi, Rosemary! What originally inspired you to start this work?

I heard about the SP program from theatre colleagues and saw it as a wonderful opportunity to integrate my healthcare background and passion for theatre and artistic expression in service to the community.

Do you have previous acting experience? Has this helped you in your experience as a standardized patient?

Yes, I trained in theatre before entering healthcare. My theatre background has helped with my improvisation skills and character development. The SP program gives me the unique opportunity to create believable characters that are grounded in reality.

What unique perspectives and experiences are you able to share with medical students?

Sometimes the nonverbal behaviours of the healthcare team will have the most effect on the patient. The simulated patient experiences are dramatic encounters used with intention to teach humanistic skills like empathy and therapeutic communication. These are skills I believe to be fundamental to healthcare delivery.

As an SP I approach each encounter as an opportunity to support students to have a successful learning experience.

The duality of the SP role in being both a participant and an observer during the simulation is a unique experience.

What motivates you to continue working with medical students?

Lifelong learning and contribution to future generations of healthcare providers.

Rosemary enjoyed a 25-year career as a healthcare practitioner in nursing prior to this role. With a background in theater, she is also currently a performer and an active supporter of the arts in her local community of Victoria, BC.

If you are interested in becoming an SP, the IMP Patient Program accepts applications for new participants throughout the year. Acting experience is helpful but not required, with Sammie noting that people who have other relevant skills like public speaking or teaching experience also enjoy this work.

Could Mindfulness & Community Help Healthcare Burnout?

When a healthcare provider burns out, it’s not just their personal well-being that suffers. It can detrimentally impact patient care and the wider healthcare system too.

With the causes of burnout just as multifaceted and interconnected as the effects, finding solutions for this ever-increasing issue is a complex task. But a multidisciplinary team co-led by Dr. Jane Gair, a Teaching Professor at the UBC Island Medical Program, is getting ready to explore one potential therapy: a mindfulness community of practice.

Between 68 and 86% of Canadian physicians reported burnout in 2021 (up from 30% in 2018) and 47% met the criteria for depression, while 75% of nurses experienced burnout. Previous studies have shown mindfulness – a state in which one is highly aware and focused on the present moment, but not engrossed in the emotions associated with it, using open, non-judgemental, and focused attention – could help prevent and treat burnout.

The idea to study this came from the project’s other co-lead, Dr. Mark Sherman. The Victoria-based physician, who founded the BC Association of Living Mindfully (BCalm) program, regularly hosts mindfulness retreats for physicians. At these retreats, attendees are encouraged to build communities of practice that keep them in touch with each other for support and meditation after going home.

While previous studies have shown that mindfulness can decrease burnout and increase resilience, there isn’t a lot of research on physicians at retreats or on a post-retreat community of practice explains Gair.

To support their work planning a research program, the team received a 2024 Convening and Collaborating Award from Michael Smith Health Research BC. Gair says they are using the 18-month grant to “think about, create, and design the best possible research question and project that we can.” Dedicated to embodying the spirit of the grant, the team is also committed to collaborating with external partners. A recent addition is project manager Mitch Renaud, who brings his practice as a meditator with more than 10 years of experience leading various projects and grants in the arts. They are also currently working with individuals at Island Health and the BC SUPPORT Unit to design an engagement session that will give Vancouver Island-based physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals the opportunity to co-develop the research program.

“There are many benefits of engaging people with lived experience in the development of research projects,” says Hiro Ito, Patient and Public Research Engagement Lead at the BC SUPPORT Unit Island Centre.

“One of the core reasons is to ensure that the research is meaningful and relevant to the people it impacts the most. Without the voices of people with lived experience, there may be many challenges or strengths that are overlooked by the research team,” she says. “Engaging people with lived experience early in the research process can also ensure that the study design is appropriate and most effective in answering key research questions.”

The engagement session will also be a learning opportunity for the team’s medical student members. The students—who include Anthony Preston, Chanel Mandap, Leah McFarelane, and Nathan Johal (all IMP Class of 2027)—will facilitate small group conversations on specific elements of the research program. “We wanted to use part of this grant to provide medical students with training and skills in research,” says Gair.

While the team is excited to understand how mindfulness retreats and communities of practice could mitigate burnout in healthcare professionals, Gair is aware that these may not be the best solutions for everyone. “I feel like the term ‘mindfulness’ is overused and some people are tired of it. There are also spiritual connotations that some people don’t want to interact with,” she explains.

She also doesn’t want to give the impression that it’s up to the individual to solve the issue of healthcare-based burnout. “A lot of this is put on the individual. ‘If you were just more resilient, if you just went to this workshop, if you just did this, if you just did that, then you would be better.’ It isn’t fair. People start to push back and say, ‘But I’m not the problem,’” Gair says. “It’s the expectations of the system that are the problem.”

“We want to demonstrate that there is a problem, and that there may be ways that we could support people through it,” she says. “If there are ways to intervene and help reduce burnout, maybe the healthcare system could be a little more resilient too.”

To prepare for learning more about the impact of a five-day meditation and mindfulness retreat for healthcare professionals, the team is working with important stakeholders to develop a research protocol. These stakeholders include physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals, who will have the opportunity to co-develop the mindfulness research program at an engagement session lead by UBC medical students, including four second-year IMP students.

At this special evening information session, you’ll learn about UBC’s Doctor of Medicine program (known as the UBC MD Undergraduate Program) and the IMP, the admissions process, what it takes to become a doctor, and what it’s like being in medical school. A Q&A period will follow the presentation.

Dr. Shahin Shirzad, Assistant Dean of Admissions, will co-host this special evening information session with current IMP students. The IMP admissions coordinator will also be on-hand to answer questions.

Engagement Opportunity for Healthcare Professionals

Earlier this year, teaching professor Dr. Jane Gair received a Convening and Collaborating Award from Michael Smith Health Research BC. Together with co-lead Dr. Mark Sherman and a multidisciplinary team that includes several IMP students, Dr. Gair is using the grant to develop a program of research focused on the use of mindfulness as an intervention for burnout in healthcare professionals.

The team is committed to partnering with healthcare professionals to co-develop this initiative.

The team is currently seeking Vancouver Island-based physicians, specialists, nurses, and other health professionals to participate in an upcoming engagement opportunity. The one half-day (4-hour) in-person engagement session will take place in the Medical Sciences Building at the University of Victoria on April 12, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Welcoming Dr. Laura Farrell, the IMP’s new RAD

On September 1, 2024, Dr. Laura Farrell became the Regional Associate Dean (RAD), Vancouver Island for the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Medicine and the Academic Director, Vancouver Island for the UBC distributed programs at the University of Victoria (UVic). She is the third RAD to lead the MD Undergraduate Program-Island Medical Program (IMP) in its 20-year history and holds the role of Academic Director, Vancouver Island, UBC Distributed Programs, UVic.

A graduate of both UVic and UBC, Dr. Farrell has worked with the UBC Faculty of Medicine for more than 15 years. From 2008 – 2021, she held several roles at the IMP, including Internal Medicine Clinical Education Lead, Master Teacher, and IMP Site Assistant Dean, Education. For the past three years, Dr. Farrell’s leadership role had a provincial scope as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs for the UBC MD Undergraduate Program. In her new dual role, Dr. Farrell will provide strategic leadership at the IMP to ensure the delivery of outstanding undergraduate medical education. She will also support the integration of UBC distributed postgraduate residency programs, health professions programs, and academic research on Vancouver Island. Together with foundational partners UBC, UVic, and Island Health, Dr. Farrell will continue to cultivate a supportive and thriving medical education community focused on transforming health for everyone.

We sat down with Dr. Farrell to learn a little more about her next five years as RAD and Academic Director, and to learn a little more about her.

Understanding that it’s still early in your term, can you give us a peek into your vision for the future of medical education on Vancouver Island?

We have a strong, wonderful team of medical educators and administrators across the Island that offer diverse learning opportunities for our learners, and this team continues to grow. We will continue striving to ensure this team has the tools and supports necessary to sustainably provide excellence in medical education. In addition, I hope to continue work with learners to understand their needs and tackle challenges together as our programs grow. Immersed in our programs, learners have important insights to contribute, and working together, we can co-create success of our programs. And we will continue work with community partners to better understand local needs, including how our teaching programs might synergistically contribute to excellent care for patients across the Island, helping to transform health for everyone.

You’ve talked about building strong collaborative partnerships, including diverse voices in decision-making, and creating academic research opportunities on the Island. Why are these important aspects of your vision?

So often we are working in silos on shared goals. By working together to innovate and co-create solutions in medical education, all partners benefit from the diverse voices, experiences, and resources on our teams. For example, our undergraduate medical, postgraduate residency, and new health professions programs can look to share resources and align supports for their learners on the Island. Our programs can also benefit by exploring collaborations with our partners to harness opportunities for primary care and multidisciplinary training experiences, as well as research opportunities, across our Island teaching sites. In other words: we are stronger together.

You have worked with the UBC Faculty of Medicine for more than 15 years. How will this previous experience help you in this role?

I have diverse experiences teaching medical students and residents, engaging in medical education research, partnering on innovations, creating curriculum, and building supports for learners. This has given me a good understanding of the challenges that might be encountered on a day-to-day basis and as we grow and evolve. I hope I can use what I have learned to help navigate these challenges and to ensure that what we are doing is sustainable and meets people’s needs. And I expect that going forward I will continue to learn and grow from all those around me who bring their own experiences and expertise.

Well, I think that’s enough of the high-level questions for a minute! Let’s also get to know you. What book are you currently reading?

Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, but my favourite book this year is Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese.

Who’s your medical hero?

This is a tough question as I have been mentored and taught by so many great people over the years. One person I’ll always be grateful to is Dr. Ernie Janzen in Lethbridge. Overwhelmed and nervous in my first year of clinical practice as a General Internist, he taught me to (try to) remain calm, thorough, and diligent. (Not to mention his clinical acumen and work ethic was inspiring!)

Where’s your favorite place to spend an afternoon in Victoria?

At the Hartland Dump – mountain biking with friends or family!

Do you have any Vancouver Island bucket list items?

I hiked the West Coast trail with some of my fellow graduates of the UBC Class of 2002 right after we wrote the LMCC, and I would love to go back and hike it with my family.

Any last comments?

I am sincerely grateful for Dr. Bruce Wright for his leadership and service to advancing medical education on Vancouver Island during his 10-year term as RAD, as well as for his generous gifts of time and mentorship to many of us in this program. I am also so excited to have rejoined the amazing team on the Island as we work together to provide excellence in health professions education to our next generation of physicians and healthcare professionals.

Recognizing Exceptional Medical Educators

Students in the IMP Class of 2026 nominated Dr. Bourdon when asked to name an extraordinary preceptor who made an impact on them during their first two years of medical education and who they felt were deserving of recognition.

This award rewards the teaching excellence of a full-time or affiliate UVic faculty member who has completed at least two consecutive years of teaching duties in the IMP preclinical years or the Division of Medical Sciences.

This award acknowledges the rotation that provides the most efficient, supportive, and engaging learning environment for IMP’s third-year clinical clerk medical students. Current fourth-year IMP students recommended the rotation for this award based on experiences during their third year. This is the third year in a row that the Emergency Medicine rotation has received this award.
