Busting Myths About the Hospital Emergency Department

Why do I have to wait so long?
Why did that person get seen before me?
How can I get treated sooner?
Why do I have to tell the same story over again?
Who are all these people?
What and whom should I bring with me?

If you’ve ever had to visit the emergency department (ED), you’ve probably asked a few of those questions. Now, you can find the answers you need and more in Dr. Fred Voon’s new book Your Inside Guide to the Emergency Department—And How to Prevent Having to Go!

Dr. Voon, a clinical assistant professor with the UBC Faculty of Medicine based in Victoria, says he hopes the book will help improve public health literacy by sharing key information and busting myths about accessing emergency care. He also hopes the book will help people avoid unnecessary ED visits.

This information includes at-home approaches to deal with common medical complaints, how to recognize a true emergency, and a guided tour of a typical ED to help you understand what’s going on if you end up there.

To learn more about Dr. Voon’s book, visit drvoon.ca or read his interview with the UBC Faculty of Medicine. You can order Your Inside Guide to the Emergency Department—And How to Prevent Having to Go! on Dr. Voon’s website or at independent bookstores, including Bolen Books.
