Staff at the IMP

How Do Staff Contribute to the IMP?

Our staff implement the delivery of the UBC MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP) at the Island Medical Program (IMP). Our work covers several areas, including Year 1 & 2 Curriculum, Year 3 & 4 Curriculum, Patient Programs, Student Affairs, Admissions, Dean’s Office, and AV Technology Support.

Most IMP staff work at one of three distinct locations in Victoria: the Medical Sciences Building on the University of Victoria campus, Coronation Annex at Royal Jubilee Hospital, and Victoria General Hospital. We also have staff situated at hospital-based sites in Duncan, Nanaimo, Comox, and Campbell River.

The UBC Postgraduate Medical Education and UBC Health Professional programs on Vancouver Island also form a part of the IMP team. (Please note, this page focuses on the experience of staff supporting the UBC MDUP only).

What Is It Like Working at the IMP?

We are a diverse and inclusive team that thrives on teamwork and meaningful connection. If you’re seeking a workplace that truly celebrates your contributions and supports work-life balance, the IMP is a great place to be.

For the Fall 2025 team builder, staff members volunteered at the Shelbourne Community Kitchen.

There are regular opportunities for staff to connect with each other at our sites. We organize fun activities such as employee wellness events, fundraising drives, crafting sessions, puzzle challenges, and more. Staff from all three locations also get together twice per year for workshops and team builders.

We promote a culture of recognition and appreciation across our sites through our internal Kudos program, where team members send each other kind messages for a job well done. Quarterly draws give kudo recipients the chance to receive a small gift as well. We also recognize years of service at our annual seasonal celebration, where staff present fellow team members with warm testimonies and congratulations.

We asked some of our team members to share their experiences working at the IMP, as well as their thoughts on what makes our program so unique. Here’s what they said:

What are the Opportunities for Growth at the IMP?

In addition to providing an inclusive and positive work environment, the IMP also offers internal programs to support career development goals.

We have a job shadowing program that allows staff to preview the work of other team members working at a higher level of responsibility, as well as a mentorship program that matches staff with more senior employees to support professional development goals.

In addition, funds for professional development (e.g., courses) are available to all continuing employees.
