Island Dermatology Series


The Island Medical Program’s Physician Education Program is pleased to offer the Island Dermatology Series. This series features four hour-long introductory webinars covering core topics in dermatology that are encountered by Island primary care clinicians in their daily practice.

This free program is facilitated by Vancouver Island dermatologists, Dr. Gabriele Weichert and Dr. Michael Copley, and a family medicine specialist with a focus on skin cancer, Dr. Gene Filanovsky.


In this session, you will learn

  • what topical to prescribe first, second, and third
  • who is a good candidate for isotretinoin
  • how to prescribe isotretinoin

In this session, you will learn how to

  • describe the biology and epidemiology of malignant and premalignant lesions of keratinocyte origin
  • consider clinical features to determine basal cell carcinoma subtype, optimal biopsy technique, and treatment options
  • define hyperkeratotic vs proliferative variants of actinic keratosis and apply the concept of field cancerization to guide treatment
  • differentiate low vs. high risk squamous cell carcinoma based on clinical features and histopathology. Select appropriate biopsy technique and treatment

In this session, you will learn how to

  • outline use of the term “dermatitis”
  • recognize the morphology of common dermatitis variants
  • familiarize novel systemic agents in atopic dermatitis
  • review why the case study patient is not well controlled and when to refer

  • Review the distinguishing clinical features of plaque psoriasis and rarer psoriasis subtypes
  • To outline the most important psoriasis comorbidities
