On April 20, the IMP’s Class of 2021 celebrated the first-round results of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS), which pairs medical students with postgraduate training programs (i.e., residencies) across Canada.
To mark their special, emotion-filled Match Day, the class gathered on Zoom to share their placements, offer congratulations, and celebrate their next steps.
We connected with a few of those students after the celebration to learn what excites them most about their residency programs and the communities where they’ll be training.
Name: Emma Woo
Matched to: Neurology, Calgary
Neurology deals with the fundamentals of how people interact with their surroundings—how they talk, move, feel, and think. There is nothing more beautiful than that! I am so grateful to be going into a career in which I get to understand and explain symptoms and concepts that are so often ineffable. Neurology is as much a global community as it is a powerhouse of ideas, and Calgary is a hub at the centre of it all. Research, health equity work, rural neurology, you name it! A big thanks to the IMP for connecting me with mentors who got me excited about this dream specialty!
Name: Arielle Roberts
Matched to: Family Medicine – Strathcona
Family medicine is all I’ve ever really wanted to do. It is such a privilege to build lasting relationships with patients and to be present at all the good and not-so-good moments throughout their lives, and no other specialty really gets to make a difference in that way! The Comox Valley is my home, and I’m beyond excited to take these next steps in my career and to get to put down roots in a place I love at the same time.
Name: Conor Zeer-Wanklyn
Matched to: Psychiatry, Victoria
Matching to psychiatry is a dream come true! I get study what I love, right here in this island paradise. I get so engrossed understanding the people, science, diagnoses, and treatments in psychiatry. And there is so much advocacy work to be done in the field, which I find so exciting! I’ve known since I was a kid visiting from the mainland that Vancouver Island was my natural ecosystem, and I’m so happy to stay here, at home, with some of the people I love most.
