Recognizing Exceptional Medical Educators

Drs. Sienna Bourdon, Rob Grmek, Ashley Jewett, Amita Modi, and Leigh Anne Swayne, and the Emergency Medicine rotation team are the recipients of the 2024 Teaching Awards! These awards recognize outstanding teaching contributions to the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Island Medical Program and the University of Victoria’s (UVic) Division of Medical Sciences.

“We are very grateful to have such amazing teachers dedicated to the education of our future healthcare professionals,” says Dr. Laura Farrell, Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Island, UBC Faculty of Medicine and Academic Director, Vancouver Island, UBC Distributed Programs, UVic.

“These individuals are part of a larger group of medical educators across Vancouver Island who provide the foundation of our education programs. We are so fortunate they are willing and able to give their time to share their knowledge and expertise with our students.”

Dr. Ashley Jewett (Psychiatry)
2024 Vancouver Island Clerkship Preceptors Teaching Excellence Award

This award acknowledges the outstanding dedication, enthusiasm and respect a clerkship preceptor demonstrates in teaching the IMP’s third-year students. Current fourth-year IMP students recommended Dr. Jewett for this award based on experiences during their third year. Dr. Jewett also received this award in 2021 and 2022.

Dr. Amita Modi (Family Medicine)
Dr. Bruce Crawford Award of Excellence for 2024

This annual award is presented by the IMP’s third-year students to the teacher, preceptor, or tutor who made an impact on their first two years of medical training.

Dr. Leigh Anne Swayne (Professor)
Teaching Award in Medical Sciences for 2024

This award rewards the teaching excellence of a full-time or affiliate UVic faculty member who has completed at least two consecutive years of teaching duties in the IMP preclinical years or the Division of Medical Sciences.

Emergency Medicine rotation (accepted by Dr. James Goulding)
2024 Island Medical Program Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award

This award acknowledges the rotation that provides the most efficient, supportive, and engaging learning environment for IMP’s third-year clinical clerk medical students. Current fourth-year IMP students recommended the rotation for this award based on experiences during their third year. This is the third year in a row that the Emergency Medicine rotation has received this award.
